Chat Handoff

Hit "Chat memory full" or a chat that's too long? Paste the old chat and get a short brief to start a new chat without explaining everything again.

  1. In the old chat, select all the text (or export it) and copy it.
  2. Paste it below and press Make my brief.
  3. Check the brief, fix anything wrong, copy it and paste it as the first message of a new chat.

Works best when messages start with "You said:" / "ChatGPT said:" (what ChatGPT copies) or "User:" / "Assistant:". Plain text works too. Or load a file:

Better results: let the AI summarize itself

If your old chat still answers, paste this prompt there first. Then paste its reply into a new chat. You can also run its output through the tool above.

Why does this happen?

ChatGPT can only send a limited amount of text to the model per reply. Each reply re-sends the whole conversation, so a long chat eventually doesn't fit. Since about late September 2026 ChatGPT shows "Chat memory full" when a conversation reaches that limit, and offers to start a new chat with an automatic summary. OpenAI Support described it as the conversation reaching its "available memory/context limit".

This is not the same as the "Saved memories" list in Settings. Deleting saved memories does not fix a full chat (explainer).

Around 20–21 October 2026 a bug also showed the message in short or brand-new chats. On 21 October OpenAI Support said it had "applied a mitigation" (forum thread). If a short chat still shows it, report it to OpenAI.
