The job
An agent that checks contracts, policies or filings against a checklist, highlights clauses that need attention, and drafts a summary for a human reviewer.
Why it is hard
- Errors can be expensive: a missed clause or an invented one has legal consequences.
- Long, messy PDFs break simple text extraction and chunking.
- The agent has to quote the source text exactly, not paraphrase from memory.
- Sensitive documents raise privacy and data-handling questions.
What a good setup needs
Tools
- A document pipeline that keeps layout and page numbers (RAGFlow, Dify or similar)
- A model or hosting option that meets your data rules (local models if needed)
- A checklist of rules written as testable questions
- An output format that links each finding to a page and exact quote
Guardrails
- Every finding must include an exact quote and page reference
- Keep data in an approved environment; consider self-hosting or a vendor with the right agreements
- Use the agent to assist reviewers, not to give legal advice
- Keep an audit trail of what the agent saw and said
Human-in-the-loop points
- A qualified person (lawyer or compliance owner) makes every final decision
- Reviewers verify quotes against the source for every flagged item
- A person owns changes to the rule checklist
How to start small
Start here: Test on 20 documents you have already reviewed and measure what the agent missed and what it invented before it touches new work.
How to know it works: Recall on known issues, and the rate of findings that quote text not in the document (should be zero).

Quick answers
Is AI document review safe for legal work?
Use it to assist a qualified reviewer, not replace one. Require exact quotes and page references, and check them against the source.
Do I need to self-host for sensitive documents?
Often you need to confirm where data goes. Self-hosted tools and local models are one option; otherwise read the vendor's data terms and get your own advice.
